IT'S A SHOWCASE ... REVIEW!

18/02/10
Formed by Eskimo Joe & Catherine Haridy, Dirt Diamond Productions is a brand new label giving emerging musicians a platform to be heard. DDP brought their first two signings over to Sydney for a label showcase, with Perth popster Steve Parkin and alt rockers The Chemist making up the bill.

In his silver blazer, Steve Parkin hit the stage looking the part, joined by a particularly special support - The Backing Tracks, aka Eskimo Joe. Eskis proved to be the ultimate accompaniment, pumping out tight tunes while still allowing Parkin to shine.

Kicking off in perfect pitch, Parkin appeared nervous, though it wasn’t until third track California that he truly relaxed, found his groove and sunk into the performance. As his band emptied stage, The Chemist keyboardist James Ireland joined Parkin for a simple ballad executed beautifully.

There was no questioning the confidence of The Chemist, kicking off their set with some disjointed pop and charisma too natural to be faked. The wonderfully unpredictable style of the four piece exploded in Heaven’s Got A Dress Code and continued building to the final beat of One Thing On Your Mind.

As his band filtered off stage frontman Benjamin Witt stood alone in the spotlight with his mic & pedals. Using only his voice, he created a breathtaking harmonic mashup that really was amazing and musically unique. Staccato, surreal and stunning, this showcase was electric; a great way for DDP to launch.
